SILENCING

Silencing parts of audio

This is a draft and will be cleaned up for clarity by EB at the next work meeting. [the below is based on discussion with Brian MaW and Leonid from CHILDES)

For silencing out personal information in clan files there are 2 main options

A. mark individual lines in the clan file and use built-in "silence" command CLAN's SILENCE looks for utterances with some specific string and converts the linked segment of the related audio file to silence to preserve anonymity. By convention, the strings Lastname andAddress are used to mark sentences to be silenced. However, other strings or postcodes can be used with the +s switch to the same effect.

One can exclude long stretches by including some marker in the CHAT main line that marks an element as needing exclusion. For example, you could rely on the postcode [+ sil] and use the command.

silence +s"[+ sil]" *.cha

This would require you to mark each LENA "utterance" with this code which is not practical for very large chunks.

From Leonid: "create a dummy silence speaker tier, for example *SILENCE:, then add SILENCE LENA string to "@Participants:" header tier. You do not need to create an @ID tier for this speaker. And add the following tier at every place where silence is needed:

SILENCE: Keyword . ● (this bullet is hiding a timestamp that has a very long range, swallowing up other timestamps on other lines, as it were)

Of course, replace "Keyword" with appropriate string or not, and create appropriately timed bullet.

Next just run command silence +sKeyword *.cha
